Barcelona Spain
By Chris Wall
9/25/2000 -- We got off to a slow start today. We have not adjusted to the new time zone, and the people here in Spain work on a different schedule than I am use to in the USA. The night life starts at about midnight and goes until six in the morning. I woke up in time to catch the metro down Espanyna exit on the green rail. We didn't know where that was but it sounded like an interesting exit. Many of the people on the train got off so we decided to follow. It was a good choice. Most of the picture below tell the story of what we say as the sun set. It was absolutely beautiful. I am not use to seeing escalators outside. This weekend is the biggest celebration weekend of the year in Spain and the streets are lined with speakers and they have an entire area of the plaza lined with huge fireworks that are going to be set off tomorrow night at 10pm. Hopefully we will be there it should be quite a show. After the sunset we decided to go in search of some food and some new clothes. We stopped at a souvenir shop and I bought a clean T-shirt with a sketch of Barcelona on the front and a rugby shirt with blue and black stripes. With our clean clothes we decided to set out in search of food. We found a restaurant on Las Ramblas calle, but we didn't know what to order so the waiter basically told us what we were going to have and brought it to us. It was quite a lot of food and the waiter also forgot to mention the price until he brought us the bill. Ouch. On our way back to the metro we passed a gas station which is in the picture below. Things here in Spain are not much different than what we are use to in the US. The buildings are mostly very old, but the new parts are similar to what is found in the US. Also the cars are much smaller than the cars in the US since the streets are so narrow. Most of the people ride around on mopeds or motorcycles. I am going to get to bed early tonight and try to adjust to the local time. Buenos noches from Barcelona.
